Gowan Apple Farm
From CFI
(hello from Aimee Hanson)
As we welcome the Mendocino County Farmer’s Market Season with a multitude of fresh, ripe and colorful offerings from our local farmers I find myself inspired, once again, by the produce. What’s in season? What looks good? Who are the farmers? Who’s growing the peaches, where are the flowers, what about them apples?
I caught up with Jim & Jo Gowan of Gowan’s Apple Farm located 2 ½ miles north of Philo – you might recognize them on the 2008 Farmer’s Market poster. They are local apple farmers and I got a chance to learn a little about them and how the Farmer’s Market has fit into their lives.
“The other farmers are really great – real good and capable people working together. People come up to me at Farmers Market and tell me they haven’t had anything that taste this good from their local store,” said Jim Gowan, Gowan’s Apple Farm. “You couldn’t do without an apple a day…two or three isn’t enough!”
This makes it easy to understand why the Gowan’s continue to sell apples of unfailing quality with courtesy and charm. “I have lots of friends at the Farmer’s Market, I love my association with the people there,” says Jo Gowan, Jims wife. Did you know… “We sell our apples to schools in California who have apple vending machines. We sell to prisons. You’ll find our apples at the Farmer’s Market and of course our roadside store in Philo.” Jo continues, “We encourage people to eat lots of apples for health!”
Want to know more? Grab a friend and visit your local Farmer’s Market to get to know the Gowans and the other farmers that we are so grateful to have in Mendocino County. Start up a conversation with them. Find out how long they’ve been around. Ask them for their recommendations. Not only will you taste some of the freshest, most healthful food around, but you’ll learn an awful lot about your community, its history and its diversity.
