(Diane Smalley and Wolfgang Ronenfeldt) Question: What would be the components of a program to 1) build bridges between allopathic medicine and wholistic medicine - naturopathic medicine, homeopathy, bodywork, natural childbirth, nutrition, exercise, traditional Chinese medicine, psychological counseling, etc. and 2) provide care for people who rely on pharmaceutical medicine that may become more expensive or less available? Answer: Components of this program would include reaching out to and involving the allopathic medical community in our discussions, finding analogs to pharmaceuticals that can be derived from locally produced resources such as herbs and food, community education, training of more professionals and helpers in wholistic medicine, nutritional counseling, learning materials - video, books, a library/resource center. We could create some videos of case studies being treated in a wholistic manner. We could create a pilot program for people that rely on pharmaceutical medicines to begin to find alternatives and/or help them to improve their wellness in general.
(Diane Smalley) Question: Regarding the plans for a new Howard Hospital, who are the developers and where are they in the process of design and would it be possible to work with them to include natural modalities and possibly an herb garden? Answer: Wednesday, December 8, at the City Coucil meeting, the zoning change for the hospital was approved. We met Tom Herman, Willits City Engineer, who is the spokesperson for the Howard Foundation development project - he sits on the Howard Foundation board. He recused himself from any City responsibilities regarding the Hospital. He seems to be a very open person and should be approached with respect. The Howard Foundation has asked the developer to include passive solar and other energy conservation measures in the design. They welcome community input.

The Health and Medicine study group has very much been in the inventory stage. This is my condensation of the first two group meetings. To the other members of the group - This is my memory and notes; PLEASE, correct and/or expand upon what I say here.
Health and Medicine Question 1 What health care resources presently exist in the Willits area?
Health and Medicine Question 2 How will the lack of oil change the health care resources?
Health and Medicine Question 3 How can we create more medicines locally?
Health and Medicine Question 4 What are the legal complications of alternative health care practices?
Health and Medicine Question 5 Can we influence the design of the new hospital?
There are several subtopics under these generalizations. Over time these topics will probably grow to deserve pages of their own.
