Ancient Forests International

These are a great group of activists based out of Redway Nor. Cal. They have projects in California, Chile and Ecuador. CFI has worked with AFI in the past by bringing students to the reserves they have helped to protect. They host volunteers at some of their reserves like:

Los Cedros

Please check out and support the important work that they do.

6 de Abril 2005-Los Cedros Primate Conservation Network

The Los Cedros Reserve received news today that an important project has been approved for financing through the Darwin Initiative, one of the United Kingdoms important contributions to fulfill obligations under the terms of the Kyoto Treaty.

The project is to create a network for the conservation of the critically endangered Brown Headed Spider Monkey, a primate endemic to Northwest Ecuador. Though the details of the financing approved are pending, the Los Cedros Reserve will be the center for collection of primate data and host to the training facilities for training community based primate monitors.

This project will provide the reserve with a defined direction in a much neglected area of scientific study. Other participants in this project include the National Herbarium which will conduct habitat studies and the Museo de Ciencias Naturales which will coordinate primate data collection. The University of Sussex will sponsor much of the technical assistance and advanced training for Ecuadorian postgraduate training.

Workshops will be initiated at this reserve, for selected individuals who actually live in areas where this now difficult to encounter primate is found, to create this community based network of monitors and data collectors.

Guaria de Osa

is an amazing retreat center in probably one of the most beautiful places on Earth, the Osa peninsula in Costa Rica. Founded by ethnobotonist Jonathon Miller Weisberger, the retreat center is available for any sort of an event, but they specialize in Yoga retreats. Jonathon has worked in the past with Indigenous groups in the Ecuadorian Amazon and continues to do annual ethnobotanical adventures into the Amazon. Chack out their site and get on a mailing list to find out how and when to participate. There are also volunteer possibilities available.

Acción Ecológica

The major and most radical direct action environmental and human rights defense group in Ecuador. They tackle many different issues at a time and are always taking political stances in ways that the other mainstream environmental groups in Ecuador won't. Freeda Burnstad, CFI's Director of projects in Ecuador, worked with them on the OCP pipeline educational campaign and was very impressed at their organization and purity of vision for environmental protection. They accept volunteers to work both in Quito and in the feild. If ever in Quito one should at least visit their offices as they offer a wealth of information about the environmental movement in Ecuador both past and present. The website is in Spanish.

Sustainable Community Action wiki

The SCA wiki is for anyone interested in sustainability but especially ordinary people and community groups. The wiki is relatively new, started in December 2004, but seeks to link up community action for sustainability worldwide.
