MACBE Mendocino Alliance for a Community Based Economy

From CFI

bascobascade This is a last call for help with the BARN RAISING FOR THE ELK CREAMERY, February 24-25-26 (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.).

PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO FRIENDS, FAMILY, & OTHER PROSPECTIVE HELPERS

What we're asking for...

1. Your help with the barn-raising. Below you'll find a list of related projects for which leaders and workers are needed. (We're especially in need of leaders and crews for electrical, plumbing, and gutters.) 2. Your action in support of this important part of our local food economy.

We're asking you to reply (by Saturday, please) to this email or phone 895-9313 to volunteer.

What you'll get...

1. Local, gourmet-quality food each day! 2. A party, with local wine and beer and a roasted pig, to celebrate completion of the barn. 3. Three days of fun and working together, overlooking the beautiful Pacific, in the presence of the expectant momma goats who await the barn. 4. The satisfaction of making a real contribution to our local food economy by supporting one of our local farmers.

Barn-raising Crews

We need crew leaders and workers in the following areas:

Roofing

Framing and finishing a utility room

General framing

Siding (2 leads here; or a lead and two subs)

Doors

Feeders for the goats and other interior improvements

Electrical

Plumbing

Sheet metal (gutters and downspouts)

Painting

Ideally, crew leaders and workers will come with their own tools, and labor will be donated. Wonderful food will be provided each day. In the event of heavy rain, the work schedule will shift to the next day.

We're asking all of the crew leaders to show up for a meeting on Feb. 23 for planning and coordination purposes.

We hope to have all necessary materials on hand, but would appreciate any leads (now!) on locally-milled rough-sawn Redwood siding and/or Fir framing lumber.

We also need:

  • 10 3-foot x 4-foot windows (sliders best, but some fixed windows would be okay)
  • A power center to plug extension cords into
  • scaffolding and extension ladders

Please contact Doug (895-9313) to sign up.

Please pass this along to others who may be interested or contact Doug with leads on prospective workers. Many hands makes the load light!

Doug will send a confirming email with details early next week.

Please contact Kermit with technical questions (877-1719).

With thanks, in the spirit of local economy and cooperation, and in anticipation of another year of fine cheese!

Doug Mosel

Why the Mendocino Alliance for Community-Based Economy?

The problem is that the industrial growth society is inherently unsustainable. It is “virtually impossible for us to know the economic history or the ecological cost of the products we buy” and the food we eat. (Wendell Berry)

Our vision is for a local economy that truly rises from the fields, woods, and streams where we live—the complex of soils, slopes, weather, connections, influences, and exchanges of our own community, our own watershed. Local, sustainable economic activity is scaled to fit the local ecosystem; it is locally owned and employs local people.

MACBE’s goal is to join our voices and creative power to build a community that provides security and health for all in the food, water, shelter, and the ecosystems on which we depend.

We believe that when we take care of our common place and everyone who lives here, we take care of ourselves and ensure a secure future for coming generations. We believe that everyone has a role and responsibility to contribute to the common good. Our goal is to join our voices and our creative power to build a community that provides security and health for all in food, water, shelter, and the ecosystems on which we depend.

Therefore, we advocate and seek to enable the growth of broad-based local ownership and right livelihoods for the sake of our common good. We promote locally-owned farms, businesses, and services and encourage the development of new ones.

- we advocate and support economic justice in our community.

- we advocate respect and equitable compensation for all workers.

- we advocate an economy that uses land and resources to provide for local needs first and a healthy environment for future generations.

- we advocate relationships of respect and initiate collaborations among local non-profit organizations, governmental entities, households, native tribal communities, and individuals.

HOW WILL MACBE DO THIS?

By connecting people and organizations in Mendocino County through events and gatherings that feature local food and focus on local economic activity

By recognizing and celebrating examples of local economic practices

By teaching one another about local economic issues

By facilitating connections between local farmers, restaurants, and schools
