In staff roster, (K) means Keyholder, as to who has access to the building right now.
Great question about what do people really want. I personally would still want to retain the Station Manager title while offloading some of the responsibilities to more relevant persons. I'm feeling clingy around this title as the one that I could most likely turn into a salaried position for myself as my capacity for climbing trees all day every day diminishes.
I'm into being a core group person who coordinates between cells. Personnel management I would take on especially at this early phase.
Program/ event calendar (special events, lunar events, etc) and maintenence of this programming collective.
a show of my own involving music and current issues
regular participation in other programs addressing community movement, station evolution, etc.
news collective
outfitting myself to be another mobile webcast outfit
defining and establishing the KMEC / M.E.C. interface (membership, structure, facilities, activism)
senior editor of Station Manual, which is the product that would address most of the issues raisedin the bulk of Alida's outline.
aside--I' consider doing a month of advertising and see how it goes-- I've had offers from buisnesses and individuals and it could get us through this startup period.
I drafted a KMEC mission statement tht went out and no one commented on, and then was lost in the transition of my computer's operating system. But it was something like this:
KMEC Radio Mission Statement
1) Advance the mission of the Mendocino Environmental Center and report on its activities.
2) Provide media outlet, resources, and training to the community, especially groups and views typically excluded from commercial and propagandist media.
3) Model functional community dialogue and journalistic integrity.
4) Become an integral part of local culture, supporting ecological justice, progressive culture, and wholistic health for future generations.
...and I would very much appreciate comments on this mission statement.

Questions about the packet from Chris What does (K) mean? Attn: Chris and everyone else. Hypothetically, if there were people enough to take care of all the responsibilities which one(s) would you still want?
Draft KMEC Programming Collective Ideas
What I did here was brain storm some of what should/could be covered, and identified areas that we need to decide collectively with an *. I hope it will give us a start to work from.
Thoughts on Process
- Consensus based with voting clause like that of the MEC.
- *Mission Statement is that of the MEC with something else added?
- Decisions have to be made about the relationship with MEC. (Eventually)
- We can implement an imperfect policy that is a work in progress as long as we establish the timeline and process for change.
Requisites for being a member of the Programming Collective:
1. Be a dues paying member of MEC/KMEC. Sweat equity option.
2. Participate in the regular Programming Collective meetings and activities. If some of these activities took place in online environments it wouldnât require as many face to face meetings.
Activities Include:
- Scheduling
- Program proposal review
- Grievances
3. Participate with at least one other cell/spoke group and itsâ meetings and activities. If some of these activities took place in online environments it wouldnât require as many face to face meetings. *What are the other spokes and their responsibilities?
4. Be responsible for a chore. Everyone has to do some of the shit work like sweeping, vacuuming, cleaning the toilet and kitchen areas, fundraising etc.
5. Follow the station protocol, *on air and house rules. We have to:
- Write the rules and procedures for being on air and using the building. The obvious first one being legal with the FCC rules on profanity and obscenity.
- Establish a grievance procedure I think that should include an anonymous complaint method, a fair âtrialâ method, probationary measures, and an appeals process.
Program Proposal Process
There should be established times of the year, maybe biannually when proposals will be reviewed and schedule change decisions made. So each programmer has a six months commitment and review. Program proposals should be submitted in writing by a deadline and should include the following info:
1. Name and contact information for the individual(s) submitting the proposal.
2. Preferred time and day.
3. Will the show be talk, music, news, a combination?
4. List a few examples of show ideas/themes.
5. Write a paragraph about how the show fulfills the KMEC mission.
This is a start, maybe you all could help brainstorm to identify the other peaces of the station manual and all the other part of the puzzle. We need to have skeleton to then put flesh on.
Jason 2/12 I'm seeing how to work!
I'm a listener tuning in from McDonald's Corners, Ontario Canada. Awesome webcast from the Ukiah Brewing Company! Wishing you success when you hit the airwaves.
