Shelter Committee

Minutes from 1/3/05 Meeting


Attendance: Kevin Rowell, Marisha Farnsworth, Sam Synersha, Bill White, Phil Jorgenson, John Cross, Holly Madrigal, Gabe Madrigal, Judi Berdis.


• Introductions

• Review of previous meeting and today’s goals

⎫ Discussion: It was decided by consensus that the roles would rotate.

⎫ The Note Taker would type the minutes, e-mail them to the committee members and to Jason, and would act as the rotating Steering Committee Liaison, to report on the notes that he/she had just taken.

⎫ The Information Coordinator is Holly Madrigal and her position will be a permanent position.

1. How many housing units are there in Willits?

2. What type of housing units are there?

3. How many people live in outlying areas?

4. How far are they from stores?

5. How much attic/wall/floor insulation does the average house have now?

6. How much does the average person pay for gas and electric, heat and water?

7. What are the indigenous building materials?

8. What have been the best building methods here in the past?

9. What’s the best “bang for the buck”-i.e. the most economic way to build a sustainable shelter?

10. What is the current building cost per square foot?

11. What are the energy saving building techniques?

12 .What are people doing now to conserve housing

energy and resources?

13. What Statistics does PG&E have for housing units,

solar rebates, insulation rebates?

• BRAINSTORMING / NETWORKING DISCUSSION

1. How can we tax ourselves and create our own energy savings account?

2. Sam Synersha: “The construction industry is responsible for about half of all the waste in this country.”

3. Confessions of frustrated builders wanting action instead of meetings – Consensus.

4. We might consider doing a Needs Assessment for Shelter.

5. Meetings include new people and people of different levels of readiness.

6. Phil Jorgenson from REDI (Renewable Energy Institute), 21 West Commercial Street, Willits, says they have a model home project/ office there with a 1.5 UniSolar roofing solar collection system. They would like to have workshops and volunteer projects ongoing like the UniSolar Certification workshop they had there last year. He brought and will zerox for us a list of 62 projects he would like to do.

7. Vital Systems is a company many of the participants are working with (Kevin Rowell, Marisha Farnsworth, Holly Madrigal, Gabe Madrigal, & Sam Synersha). Vital Systems works with alternative building techniques and has good resources for various building materials. They are interested in doing projects in, for and with the schools, and are interested in developing workshops or projects with REDI

“It takes 10 thousand pounds of water to grow one thousand pounds of grain.

China is the largest grain producer but production is falling.

As water becomes scarce, it will be drawn off from agriculture.

The US, India, France, Europe & Ukraine all have had reduced crop production last year due to heat.

Food prices will go up in the next 2 to 3 years.
